In the last couple of weeks we have been so very busy , and we are having a break, but I will put up something soon, as we are nearly there! However I have a few pics to share of the discoveries with our fireplace

We had a boring old cover on the fire place, so nah! Uncovered it to find the original fire place , in pretty poor condition, there would have been a small fire supported by a grate and they would have heated water etc in the iron clad surround (which I presume would radiate heat after the fire went out)

We had a sweep check the chimney (its not good for a fire but thats OK) and I removed the iron work, so we could see if the new fireplace we purchased would fit...it would after a few hits with a big hammer and chisel!

next stage, build the sub structure for the hearth. Wood is ok 'cos there will never be a flame near it!

the set the wooden frame into the fireplace and glue the ply boarding onto it

NB the glue is on the lower side here!

Next stage is to tile it using slate tiles. I bought them from a merchant in Portsmouth, who was able to do a slate hearth for about £200, the tiles cost £6.50! I did need to adjust the wooden structure as I made a couple of design changes, but the end result meant I did not have to cut the slate tiles, which was a blessing as they are a 'mare to cut

I am pretty happy with the end result, putting some trim in to make the edges look neat. It looks like it belongs there
